Local Glass Artist Diane Sheffrey at the Ypsi Thrift Shop

We are thrilled to be hosting Diane Sheffrey at the Thrift Shop on June 1!

Diane will have some of her beautiful fused glass pieces for sale, and she will be on site to answer your questions about this unusual, and lovely, art form.

About Diane

Diane, who has always done crafts, started working in glass by accident. At a fundraiser for a local nonprofit 12 years ago, she won a free glass blowing session at Baron Glassworks in Ypsi.

“When I scheduled my first session and started working on my first piece, a paperweight, I was somewhat hesitant. Everything was glowing, hot, and somewhat scary.  When I started my second piece,  an ornament, I was beginning to feel intrigued by the process.  By the time I began making my final piece of the session, a drinking glass, I was almost shaking with emotion.  Everything was glowing, hot and EXCITING!

“After a while, I began working with fused glass as well.  Fused glass is a very different process than blowing. It allows me to ‘quilt’ in glass.  I piece together designs and finish the work in a glass kiln.  It is a much quieter process and I find it quite peaceful.  At the same time, there is a wide range of possibilities with the fused glass.  My work is mainly ‘utilitarian’ in nature.  I like to make things that people can use and enjoy often.  Plates, platters, night lights, garden art and decorative tiles are the things I enjoy making the most.”

You will not want to miss meeting Diane and seeing her work, so mark your calendars: 4-8 PM on Friday, June 1.  The Thrift Shop is located at 14 S. Washington in downtown Ypsi, between the farmers’ market and the new Dolores Restaurant.  Free parking is available in the lot across the street and on nearby side streets.

NEW TUESDAY HOURS BEGIN MAY 1

The Thrift Shop will be open from noon to 6 PM every Tuesday, Beginning May 1.

Want to help your community?  We’re looking for volunteers!

We have been so busy during the past year that we’re looking for new volunteers to join us in our efforts to help people in need in our community.  You can participate in two ways.

  • Become a member, where you commit to 3 ½ hours of work each month—a shift in the sales room or in the marking room.  You will be trained (it’s easy!) in whichever of those tasks you choose.
  • Volunteer to do a particular task—tidying up the sales floor, helping sort donations and place them in the shop, etc.—in whatever time you can spare.

We are also looking for someone who can help us with our Web site.  Got skills?  We sure could use them!

You can pick up a volunteer application at the shop, 14 S. Washington in downtown Ypsi, during regular business hours, or call the shop (734-483-1226) and leave a message.  Our volunteer coordinator will be happy to get back to you.

The Thrift Shop is now officially registered with Kroger Community Rewards!  You can register your Kroger Plus card online or by calling the number included in the directions and choosing the Ypsilanti Thrift Shop as your designated charity.  Once you’ve completed the process, 3.5% of every purchase you make at Kroger will be placed in the Thrift Shop account.  It’s completely free, and a wonderful way to help our community!! Click on the ‘News” tab above for full details and directions!
